I am a 29 year old male duathlete, from a running background although I only started taking running seriously and competing in January 2014 after joining Morpeth Harriers AC. I’m quite new to biking but found myself very strong on the bike almost immediately.
I finished 3rd overall in my first competitive duathlon held in Morpeth Northumberland in April, winning my age category (25-29 years) comfortably. It was an age group sprint duathlon world championship qualifier, in which I would qualify automatically for the championships to represent Great Britain with this performance. The world championships were held in Pontevedra Spain on June 1st 2014. This would be my first major championships event and even with some intense training leading up to the event, the best I could hope for would be a bronze medal. The race went as well as it possibly could have, winning my age group by some 54 seconds to take the gold and become World Champion at the first time of asking.
This early success in 2014 has led me on to a busy year of training and competing in 2015 with an exciting schedule. My main events in 2015 were:
Elite British duathlon championships, finishing 8th
European Age Group Championships (silver medallist)
Ultimately the aim is to make an impact in the British elite team so I have been training and working towards this during the winter of 2015-16.
In 2016 I achieved my aim of being selected for the GB Elite Duathlon team in the European and World Championships, which made all that winter training very worthwhile! I finished 10th in the World Championships in an absolutely top class field and was delighted with this result.
I was also part of the GB Elite Relay Team in the World Championships and we won a silver medal.
However the tactical nature of the draft legal cycle racing is something that I need to work on. As I am racing for the Envoy-Epinay team in the French Duathlon Grand Prix Series I hope to improve in this area quickly.
